SUMMER ON A BUDGET: 7 THINGS TO DO WITH YOUR FAMILY THIS SUMMER

Summer is time for amusement parks, state fairs, baseball games, and water sports. However, if money is tight and you have a growing family, these summer activities are not ideal. But you still need to get outside and have some summer fun! So, what are some things you can do? Here are 7 summer activities that the whole family will enjoy without breaking the bank.

SUMMER ON A BUDGET

1. GET WET AT THE SPLASH PADS

It wouldn’t be summer without some water fun! More and more splash pads are popping up around the country. The best part is, most are free. Little ones seem to be extremely fond of the standing water, but it’s fun for all ages. Plus, fun at the splash pad = good naps! Can’t get any better than that mommy!

2. JOIN THE HIKING REVOLUTION

Hiking is a great way to spend some time with your family and connect with nature. If you haven’t heard of Hike it Baby, you’re missing out. Hike it Baby helps you connect with other families, helps you and your littles stay active, and creates a love for the outdoors. The program offers a wide range of hikes to help accommodate everyone; different paces, lengths, stroller friendly, etc. Find a Hike it Baby branch in your area by clicking here.

3. UP YOUR BERRY PICKING SKILLS

Get up early, pack some baskets, and take your littles to a local berry patch. Early in the season, are the beloved strawberries, but later on, you can still pick cherries, red raspberries, black raspberries, snap peas, blueberries, and gooseberries! It’s a lot of fun to watch the kiddos explore where food comes from and see their cute faces covered in delicious, sticky berries. By the way, you’ll probably want to dress the kids in some old clothes and be sure to pack plenty of baby wipes. Things will get messy!

4. GET SOME SAND BETWEEN YOUR TOES

There’s nothing more tranquil than spending some time at the beach. I mean what’s better than listening to the ocean waves, building sand castles, and collecting sea shells? Be sure to pack sunscreen, towels, change of clothes, and lots of snacks and water. Sunscreen isn’t recommended until 6 months of age, and even older babies won’t be able to handle hours in the sun, so be sure to create a safe place for baby to relax and play while at the beach. I would recommend investing in a good quality baby beach tent. Baby can play for hours protected from the sun, and mom and dad can have some more time to enjoy the beach!

5. CAMP IN THE GREAT OUTDOORS

Ditch the electronics and create a memorable family camping trip this summer. Whether that’s at a beautiful state park or just pitching the tent in your backyard. Be sure to have some activities planned. Have a glow stick dance party, tell stories, sing songs, and of course you can’t go camping without cooking s’mores. If you’re camping at a state park, take advantage and hike the trails, go fishing, and enjoy the wildlife. You could even create a nature scavenger hunt for the kiddos!

6. ENJOY A PICNIC IN THE PARK

Grab a blanket, fill a basket, and find a nice shady park to have a perfect family picnic. Of course, parks with baby swings are a big bonus! The older kids (including dad!) can run around and burn off some energy, and you can relax and entertain baby with some bubbles or a kite.

7. CHECK OUT YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY

The library is a perfect place to go on a rainy day or to escape the summer heat. Check your local library to see if they offer a summer reading program. These programs are open to all ages and usually have free events and prizes to go with them. If you’re nervous about your toddler sitting still through the readings (because let’s be real, toddlers have the attention span of a goldfish), no worries; most libraries also have play areas for the little ones, fully stocked with train tables and play kitchens.

SUMMING IT UP

With these ideas, you’ll still be able to get outside and have some family fun this summer without breaking the bank. Plus, a backup plan for those rainy or excessively hot summer days! You can still enjoy your summer even if you’re pregnant, have a baby, or trying to tame that toddler of yours!
