Walmart Holiday Makeover

I love the holiday season! I love the spirit of giving and serving. It is such a special time to reflect on the blessings we have and to seek for opportunities to share those blessings with others. It is my honor to partner with Walmart for their Holiday Makeover Campaign this year and I invite all of you to participate too. This is a super easy way to do a little service and help others in need, by just a few clicks on your computer!

Hunger remains a serious issue in the United States. According to a recent USDA report, more than 49 million Americans, including 16 million children, experienced food insecurity in 2013. As a mom, my heart aches for those children and mothers all around our country who probably won’t even have dinner on their tables tonight.

Food pantries have to meet the demand during their busiest time of year – the holiday season. This will require more than meals to get the job done. Providing meals for hungry families is a multi-step process that not only requires food pantries to have food on hand, but includes the proper packaging, storage and transportation of food. So many times I think of food pantries only having to provide FOOD – I never even thought of the cost of all the “extras” it entails!

Walmart’s Food Pantry Holiday Makeover campaign is a nationwide campaign calling on the public {all of US!} to help support our local food pantries this holiday season. The campaign will provide $1.5 million in grants to winning food pantries for facility makeovers. They can use the grants to purchase items like new kitchen and storage equipment, furniture, paint, or other supplies that are needed to support food pantry operations and, in turn, the families they serve. How amazing is that?!

The campaign calls on the public to get involved in the campaign by clicking here and casting one vote per day (24 hours) to help a participating food pantry. The campaign will run online from Monday, December 2 (12:01 a.m. EST) to Friday, December 12 (11:59 p.m. EST). The 75 food pantries with the most votes at the end of the voting period will each receive a $20,000 grant. The winning food pantries will be announced on December 15. I can’t wait for this!

As the nation’s largest grocer, Walmart is uniquely positioned to take a leading role on the issue of hunger in the United States. Walmart and the Walmart Foundation recently exceeded their $2 billion commitment to fight hunger in America one year ahead of schedule, and have donated more than 1.5 billion pounds of food to those in need across the country.

In addition, Walmart recently announced new goals to provide access to affordable, nutritious, sustainably grown food to those in need. This includes providing four billion healthier meals to those in need in the U.S. over the next five years. To learn more, visit foundation.walmart.com.

I invite all of you to join me in voting for your local participating food pantry to help make a difference this season! I am grateful for Walmart and their tremendous service they are offering for our country and am excited for these food pantries to be able to help so many families this holiday season! Click here to cast your vote today!
