Life In the NBA – Jimmer and Whitney Fredette

Have you ever met that person that is so gorgeous on the outside AND just as gorgeous on the inside?! That is how I feel about Whitney Fredette – and it is SUCH an honor to have her guest post on Today’s The Best Day!

Many of you probably know who Jimmer and Whitney Fredette are – they’re only the cutest couple out there! 🙂 Whitney is a former BYU cheerleader and has a degree in Broadcast Journalism. Her husband, Jimmer, plays professional basketball for the New Orleans Pelicans, so they spend half the year there and half the year in Denver, CO. I think my favorite thing about them is how REAL they are. They are kind, they are fun and they put their marriage first!

I know that all of us get so busy in our daily lives – we all have so much going on! Sometimes because of that, it gets hard to make time for our best friend! That is why I have asked Whitney to write about her life as a wife in the NBA and how she and Jimmer balance work, fun and family all together. I know you are going to learn so much from her. She is such a great example!

Not only does she know how to support her man, but she has the best fashion advice and cutest clothes. In fact, after you read this article, make sure you check out her new Fashion Blog: Whitney Jean.

It is my honor to introduce you to Whitney! Here she is…

whitney and jimmer fredette - LIFE IN THE NBA {as a wife}

People ask me all the time what it’s like being married to an NBA player.  I wish I could sum it up in one word, or even one sentence, but it is just so different from anything else, its hard to do that.

Jimmer and I were married a little over two years ago in the Denver, Colorado LDS temple.  Right after we got married, we moved to Sacramento.  He was going into his 2nd season in the NBA, and I was going to a city where I had no friends and no family.  I very quickly fell in love with the city and so did he.  I made a ton of new friends and I was riding horses- my favorite thing in the whole world.  We got traded to Chicago, at the end of his third season, and this past summer he signed a one-year contract with the New Orleans Pelicans.

Many of you probably know there is a lot of traveling involved with NBA athletes.  They play 80 games between the months of November and April.  40 of them are home games and 40 are away.  There are often times when road trips last up to 12 days.  It’s a lot of traveling, and a ton of crazy hours and time spent on airplanes.  When they are home they practice everyday,  7 days a week,  between 4-6 hours.  On game days they are usually at the gym all day getting ready.  I love when they have home game stretches,  Jimmer and I get to see each other every day.

We LOVE to eat, so we constantly try new restaurants, we love to go for walks, he forces me to work on proper football throwing technique, we play a lot of tennis, and since I ride horses everyday- he will try to come  watch me.  We really try hard to make time for each other and be involved in each other’s interests.  That is one big key to our marriage- we try to make each others interests our own interests and support each other in what we love.  I attend every home game, and as many away games as possible.  Depending on the coach, some times I am able to fly on the the team plane with Jimmer.  Not sure what the coach’s rules are in New Orleans, but we will find out soon.

I think something people don’t realize about the NBA is that it is a business.  They don’t care whose feelings they hurt, they don’t care if they put you or your family in a bad position, at the end of the day all they care about is making money, it is a business.  I’m not complaining, there are just a lot of ups and downs int he NBA- its not all rainbows and butterflies.  One of the biggest things I try to focus on, is just being an emotional support to Jimmer.  If he wants to talk about things, I am always there.  If he doesn’t want to talk about things, I never force him- instead I try to bring some comic relief!  I’m the funny one in this relationship!

Since we’ve been married we have lived in 4 cities.  We have met some incredible people, attended  unbelievable events, have had opportunities to serve in the communities, and make some of our best friends.  It has been such a wonderful experience for us.  We both know how fortunate we are to be in this position, and its not something we take lightly.  My favorite thing about it all, is that I always have someone to do everything with.  He is always by my side, and I am always by his.

If anyone has any questions about anything else, please ask!  I’d love to answer anything you need!

Below is an outfit I would typically wear to a game.  Since basketball is inside- we really can wear almost anything, skirts, dresses, jeans, jackets- its a blast to get dressed up for them.
